At Home Food & Drink Pairings

In this unique era of social distancing and sheltering in place due to COVID-19, you might be tempted to grab a frozen pizza and a six-pack of beer and call it a meal.

Since you’ll be in your home for a while, why not make it a dining experience? While it’s common to pair proteins with wine, it’s surprisingly easy to pair liquors with proteins. Try one of these liquor pairings with some Wishbone Scratch Kitchen staples.

Beef & Whiskey
Steak and aged beef have deep and rich flavors, and thus needs a liquor with similar qualities. Whiskey, with its smoky flavor, is the perfect companion. If you prefer wine, a robust and heavier red like Cabernet Sauvignon will do the trick. Lighter and crisper beverages will be overpowered by a rich, hearty cut of meat.
(Suggestions: Hamburger Steak, Petite Filet or Ribeye Grill & Smear, Steak Fingers)

Chicken & Brandy
The salt and spice of southern fried chicken go nicely with a sweet, slightly spicy liquor. Try a brandy that’s been barrel-aged for at least two years for a perfect complement.  For a wine selection, go with a Chardonnay or other full-bodied white wine.
(Suggestions: Oklahoma Chicken Fry, Okie Hot Chicken, Wishbone Wings)

Shrimp & Gin
Gin is a solid pairing for either chicken or shrimp. In this case, less is more. Go with a classic gin and tonic or gin and seltzer versus a complicated cocktail. A G & T will be a refreshing complement to both mild and spicy dishes. A full-bodied white also pairs well with shrimp.
(Suggestions: Shrimp & Grits, Coconut Shrimp)

Pork & Rye
While it’s not a traditional pairing, the full-bodied and smokey flavor of a rye complements the salty, sometimes sweet undertones of pork.
(Suggestions: Cuban Sandwich, Piggy Burger, Pig Out Nachos)

Dessert & Whiskey
Because of its rich flavor, whiskey can also be a great dessert drink. Pair it with a simple for a perfect end to a meal.
(Suggestions: Flourless Mud Cake, Deep Dish Cookie)
